Author Samantha Young Shares Shoes Inspired by The Fragile Ordinary

My new YA novel THE FRAGILE ORDINARY is told from the perspective of sixteen year old Comet Caldwell, a shy bookworm/poet with a quirky dress sense and a shoe obsession almost as big as her one for books.

For Comet, life in her small seaside town in Scotland doesn’t live up to the fantastical worlds and amazing relationships she finds within the pages of books. Until American boy Tobias King arrives at school and shakes up their entire universe. While they grapple with the unexpected bond between them, bullying, complicated friendships and tough realities, Comet does it in style.

Here is a shoe-tastical look at a year in the life of Comet’s love for Irregular Choice shoes…

Comet and I have a lot of things in common and one of those things is our love for shoes — in particular our love for Irregular Choice shoes. Here are five pairs from my own collection inspired by Comet’s own individual style throughout the school year.

Summer is over and school is back in session for Comet when THE FRAGILE ORDINARY begins. These Irregular Choice green and gold tartan shoes with a bow are the kind of shoes Comet would wear to school. She’s stuck wearing a school uniform, something that greatly pains someone with her sense of individual style. So Comet always wears a pair of shoes that are a little bit different without pushing the boundaries of the school rules too far. These low-heeled shoes are subtle until the light hits the glitter that runs through the gold pattern, appealing to the little rebel in her.

Before Comet and her friends know it, it’s two months into the school year and time to celebrate Halloween. Comet’s not so much for the Halloween Party but she is for the dressing up! These Irregular Choice white and silver glitter shoes with the corsage toe seem simple enough until Comet turns around and reveals the angel wings on the heel. I think since she and I share so much in common, I wouldn’t be wrong to suggest that Comet might pair these with a devil costume… because she’d like to think that even a devil could have a little bit of good in her.

These Irregular Choice burgundy boots with the jacquard bow are actually very similar to a pair Comet wears in the book. She wears them at Christmas time and I, too, keep these for that festive time of year. For Comet they’re the kind of boots that elevate an ordinary outfit to that level of quirky she’s so well known for. She knows other people will either love these or hate ‘em, but she loves them so that’s all that really matters to her.

When spring comes it’s usually wet and windy in Comet’s seaside town of Portobello. Still, by this time of year she’s looking forward to the nicer weather and usually wills it on with her bright and eclectic outfits. These Irregular Choice pink, floral and gold brogues with the “cinderella” heel are the perfect spring shoes to pair with turn up hem skinny jeans, a cute print tee and a blazer so that the shoes do all the talking. If she’s feeling really brave she might even try to get these past the vice principal by wearing them with the school uniform!

And finally school’s out, summers here,  and Comet can enjoy living life by the beach with her friends. These Irregular Choice shoes that I call my ‘Sun King’ shoes would be Comet’s perfect nod to summer with their bright green suede shoe and dazzling gold and pearl sunburst buckle. I can picture Comet pairing these with one of her petticoat skirts and preppy shirts, while hanging out with her friends at the local beach eatery The Espy.

  • About The Fragile Ordinary

    I am Comet Caldwell.

And I sort of, kind of, absolutely hate my name.

People expect extraordinary things from a girl named Comet. That she’ll be effortlessly cool and light up a room the way a comet blazes across the sky.

But from the shyness that makes her book-character friends more appealing than real people to the parents whose indifference hurts more than an open wound, Comet has never wanted to be the center of attention. She can’t wait to graduate from her high school in Edinburgh, Scotland, where the only place she ever feels truly herself is on her anonymous poetry blog. But surely that will change once she leaves to attend university somewhere far, far away.

When new student Tobias King blazes in from America and shakes up the school, Comet thinks she’s got the bad boy figured out. Until they’re thrown together for a class assignment and begin to form an unlikely connection. Everything shifts in Comet’s ordinary world. Tobias has a dark past and runs with a tough crowd—and none of them are happy about his interest in Comet. Targeted by bullies and thrown into the spotlight, Comet and Tobias can go their separate ways…or take a risk on something extraordinary.

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Impossible Vastness of Us and the On Dublin Street series comes a heartfelt and beautiful new young adult novel, set in Scotland, about daring to dream and embracing who you are.
