Exclusive Behind-the-Scenes Look at Wicked by Jennifer L. Armentrout

WICKED

Let’s be honest, we all judge a book by its cover… at least it’s the first thing to draw us in… the first opportunity for a book to dazzle us. Woo us. Beckon us. A fabulous cover will have us flipping to the back to read the synopsis, or often times just stuffing it in our shopping basket, ready to show it off on our shelves. When I first saw the cover of Wicked, I gasped. It was beautiful, ethereal, super cool and it made me even more excited to read this story. Between photographer Kelsey Kukal-Keeton (KKeeton Designs) and talented designer Sarah Hansen (Okay Creations), the end result of this gripping paranormal novel was stunning. I’m thrilled to be able to share a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the making of Jennifer L. Armentrout’s Wicked cover.

Here’s what Jennifer had to say regarding the making of the Wicked cover.

“I’ve always wanted an underwater cover, but alas, I hadn’t even gotten one. But when I decided to write and self-publish Wicked, I realized that I could do that, especially with working with Sarah Hansen (Okay Creations), and Kelsey Kukal-Keeton, the photographer. The underwater covers aren’t just pretty, but are also very symbolic to the theme of the novel and series.”

Check out some of these shots of the actual shoot taking place!

That’s Kelsey with the camera, of course. You can see the models holding their breaths underwater as she tries to land the perfect shot. An assistant sits on her feet so Kelsey doesn’t fall in the pool as she fights for that one shot worthy of the cover.

And those models (Justin Edwards and Heather MacDonald) needed a break every now and then to breathe!

Check out what Kelsey had to say in regards to this cover shoot:

“This shoot was the most difficult shoot I’d ever done. It was the first time I had shot underwater, but it was an experience that I will always cherish. It opened new doors and expanded my horizons. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to work with Jennifer, the models, and Sarah.”

But the making of the cover doesn’t stop with the perfect shot. There’s a whole array of options to choose from when putting these things together. Backgrounds, color saturation, treatments and fonts… there’s so much you can do to make the photograph come alive.

Sarah Hansen worked her magic from start to finish to give us the final fabulous cover. Check out the progression of the actual cover photo.

Fonts, colors, placement… all of it is carefully chosen, scrutinized and tweaked until the final product is finished and ready to be shared with the world…

Synopsis

Things are about to get Wicked in New Orleans.

Twenty-two year old Ivy Morgan isn’t your average college student. She, and others like her, know humans aren’t the only thing trolling the French Quarter for fun… and for food. Her duty to the Order is her life. After all, four years ago, she lost everything at the hands of the creatures she’d sworn to hunt, tearing her world and her heart apart.

Ren Owens is the last person Ivy expected to enter her rigidly controlled life. He’s six feet and three inches of temptation and swoon-inducing charm. With forest-green eyes and a smile that’s surely left a stream of broken hearts in its wake, he has an uncanny, almost unnatural ability to make her yearn for everything he has to offer. But letting him in is as dangerous as hunting the cold-blooded killers stalking the streets. Losing the boy she loved once before had nearly destroyed her, but the sparking tension that grows between them becomes impossible for Ivy to deny. Deep down, she wants… she needs more than what her duty demands of her, what her past has shaped for her.

But as Ivy grows closer to Ren, she realizes she’s not the only one carrying secrets that could shatter the frail bond between them. There’s something he’s not telling her, and one thing is for certain. She’s no longer sure what is more dangerous to her—the ancient beings threatening to take over the town or the man demanding to lay claim to her heart and her soul.

I love this cover!! I agree about a cover drawing you in to learn more about a book. I’ve started a collection of my favorite cover. Funny thing is most (but not all) feature just a hot guy on the cover. My daughter calls them my smut file.
