My Thoughts

A sexy, angsty fast-paced story with unexpected surprises
that keep you guessing at what will happen next.

Synopsis

a little too hotIf you play with fire…

Tossed out of college and cut off by her parents, Samantha West is in pretty dire straits. So when her rocker best friend hooks her up with a job dancing at a gentlemen’s club, who is she to turn it down? Plus, there are rules to dancing at Benny’s: No touching, keep your clothes on at all times, and never get closer than three feet. Unfortunately for Sam, her first private client makes her want to break every single one of them.

Harrison Yates is scorching hot, but he’s got a past that involves being left at the altar not too long ago. Sam is determined to make him forget about his ex, but when she makes her move, it flings her life into a spiral of chaos she never saw coming.

Because Harrison Yates isn’t who he seems to be. And his secret will probably get her killed.

My Review

This is the first book I read by Lisa Desrochers and there were lots of elements I really enjoyed. She does a great job of creating angst between two characters to where as a reader, you desperately want them to submit to the desire they clearly feel. She builds a relentless, palpable attraction that sizzles on the page, a sexiness ever-present as the story unfolds. The story is fast-paced, making it easy to devour in one sitting. I really liked Harrison Yates, just struggled a bit with connecting to Samantha, which withheld me from connecting with the two of them as a long-term couple. Samantha hasn’t had an easy past, and I think exploring her character a little deeper would have perhaps also in turn, deepened my connection to the story.

“Samantha West: Failure at life. Washed up at twenty-one.”

Sam is despondent and feeling as if she just can’t get anything right. Kicked out of her home by her mother, she tries to find a place to stay and ends up crashing with a friend and ex. She knows the she needs to find a job immediately, especially with the exorbitant rent she is forced to pay by her friend’s roommate. So when her friend,  Jonathan, suggests working as a dancer at a gentleman’s club, she says no way at first, but before too long necessity prevails and she finds herself on stage, lustful eyes on her underneath the bright lights of a new life. It seems troubles have been an inextricable part of her past and perhaps part of the problem is that she isn’t owning up to her life, taking the proverbial bull by the horns.

During her first night at the club, shadowed from afar, she thinks she sees her first love, Trent, but mistakenly discovers it’s a Trent look-a-like who is gorgeous in his own way. She can’t seem to keep her eyes off him and he off her. She decides to focus on him, swaying her body to the music as if dancing only for the beautiful man she can’t stop gazing at. When that man, Harrison Yates, begins to show up night after night, asking for a private session with Sam, desire intensifies. They begin to talk and share pieces of themselves, with a touch here and a touch more there and suddenly keeping hands off each other seems impossible, despite the rigid no-touching rules.

“His kiss isn’t gentle. It’s hungry and insistent. It’s rough and hot and angry. It’s so desperate that I ache with his need.”

And just as Sam thinks that perhaps this thing, this fire, between them can perhaps be something real that she can hold onto and explore beyond the bright lights of the club, everything falls apart. Harrison is not the person she thought he was and she’s determined to never set eyes on his again, despite her body’s aching disagreement.

As fate would have it, Sam doesn’t get a choice and she’s thrust alongside Harrison, time testing her resolve, proximity fueling the desire that burns between them. I loved how the author threw something in the story that I never expected, changing the course of what I thought the story would be, flipping it all on its side and packing some unexpected, action-packed moments.

Harrison is a man driven and committed. He’s not willing to let his emotions dictate his actions, but fiesty and sexy Sam threatens to shatter the walls he’s built around himself… around who he truly is. Moments between them crackle and sizzle and you just never knew when they were going to give in to their insistent emotions.

“I never saw you coming, Samantha West.”

Harrison helps encourage Sam to want more than the life she thinks she’s destined to live, which only makes Sam want him even more. She feels confident, sexy and desired around Harrison… she wants him, but she also knows that there is so much she is yet to uncover about who he really is.

“We’ve spend time together; gotten to know each other. There’s something beautiful and tragic in his sould that speaks to mine. I want to know him. I want to know every inch of him.”

The story is a consuming will-they-or-won’t-they… a push and pull that keeps you captivated, waiting to see what happens. There’s action and suspense, angst and seduction as the story propels forward. I wanted to have more time to developing Sam, wanted to feel like she had her act together by the end of the story so that I truly felt invested in their happily ever after. I think we see the start of that beginning to happen as the story came to it’s action-packed conclusion.

If you’re looking for a quick read, with a whole lot of sexiness, this is a great book to pick up. Each book in the series is about related characters, but A Little Too Hot can be read as a standalone book.
