Synopsis

Bleu MacAllister is consumed. A horrific childhood incident has caused every decision in her life to revolve around bringing a monster to justice. With years spent studying The Fellowship, an organized crime brotherhood of liars, thieves, and killers, Bleu will rely on her skills as a special agent to cut Thane Breckenridge off at the knees. My Review

Author Georgia Cates blurs the lines between love and deception, retribution and redemption in her latest novel, A Necessary Sin, the first release in The Sin Trilogy. The story is quite different than the Beauty series… it’s fast-paced, bolder, written in an epigrammatic fashion that has the reader moving from scene to scene quickly, experiencing how a well-devised plan begins to shred when the heart gets involved.

“For eighteen years, every aspect of my life has revolved around retaliation in one form or another.”

Bleu MacAllister witnessed her mother’s murder and faced death herself in a childhood incident that would forever shape who she was… and who she chose to become.  Driven by a laser-sharp focus on retribution, Bleu decided she would hunt her mother’s killer at the age of 12. So she trained. Studied. Learned how to deceive. How to kill. She hardened herself to live for the fateful day she would bring Scottish crime leader, Thane Breckenridge, to his death.

“True evil exists and it walks this earth in the form a well-suited man wearing expensive shoes. He speaks with a charming Scottish accent and smells of liquor and sweet tobacco. My mother’s killer.”

With a long-thought-out plan in place, she makes her move into enemy territory. She knew all about Sinclair (Sin) Breckenridge. She’d studied him too. Knew that he would be the key to infiltrating the inner circle of The Fellowship. He would bring her face-to-face with his murdering father.

“I knew there was a possibility I might have to get into bed with the enemy, but I had no idea I’d be this electrified about doing so.”

Sin didn’t do relationships. He didn’t do anything beyond a quick one-night stand in the dark bar back office. He couldn’t have any attachments, any vulnerabilities, not when he was to be crowned as future leader of The Fellowship. Sin was naturally distrustful, trained to recognize deceit… trained to carry out consequences. Lie, steal, kill… it was every day business among the brotherhood. So when Sin meets Bleu, an outsider, he takes it upon himself to figure out who she is and why she’s working at a Fellowship establishment.

“… it’s all about the right move at the right time—pacing and patience. I’ll read his emotions and body language to know what needs to come next. A necessary sin. That’s what tonight is.”

As Bleu begins to lure Sin in, she finds that he is as charming as she expected him to be. An expert in the art of seduction. To Sin, Bleu is a challenge, an enigma that he can’t help but be drawn to. Before very long at all, the game of deception morphs into a reality rife with peril, and something else entirely unexpected.

“He’s a thief who stole something much more precious than ever before–my heart. I never dreamed in a million years I could fall in love with the son of my mother’s killer.”

Nothing is as simple as following a plan of course, and emotions douse all hopes for clean and easy. Plus, danger follows Bleu as bad guys question her loyalties. With genuine feelings at play and unanticipated actions demonstrating just how real all this is, Bleu and Sin must make decisions they never expected to have to make.

“The one person I hate most in this world brought me to the one I love most.”

The story is fantastic and full of promise. Cates has really set it up to where she can take the story in a multitude of directions. I loved the suspense elements to it and really hope that she’ll give us some plot twists that surprise us in the next installment. The story sometimes felt a little too fast for me, as their coupling was fairly quick, but I really really loved the end and hope that she actually tortures us a bit in the next book, drawing out feelings to make it really heart wrenching. I really enjoyed this bolder, grittier side of Georgia Cates and can’t wait for the following book, The Next Sin.
