My Review

Revenge, love, friendship and responsibility are all themes explored by Hush Hush author Becca Fitzpatrick in her latest standalone psychological thriller, Black Ice. The story kicks off with a horrifying prologue, building a sense of chilling anticipation and fear. And so when high school senior, Britt Pfeiffer and her best friend, Korbie, decide to spend their spring break backpacking in the Grand Tetons, we know that something is coming. On their way up the mountain, Britt and Korbie find themselves stranded and in the middle of a torrential snow storm. Unable to drive any further, they brave the storm on foot to seek help as the temperature continues to plummet. Coming across a cabin deep in the woods, they hope to have found some much-needed help.

“My heart beat faster, but I was more uncertain than afraid. Again, that feeling that something wasn’t right. The whole room felt alive with voltage.”

Suddenly, however, they find themselves held hostage by two mysterious men who need the girls to help them off the mountain. Urgently. The two men are very different. They don’t seem to even get along. One of them (Shaun) seems as if he’s ready for murder, while the other (Mason) seems to try to help her. But could Britt trust Mason? Could he he help her break free? Or was he merely pretending to take advantage of her at her most vulnerable moment?

“He was my captor. He held me against my will. His recent kindness didn’t change that. I had to remind myself of who he really was.”

As they trudge through snow and survive many a complicated encounter, Britt begins to formulate a plan. We see her evolve from the girl who depended on everyone for help, to a girl who was determined to survive… to fight… to come out of this alive. But as her days in captivity tick by, she realizes she’s a part of a larger unsolved mystery… a horrendous string of murders. The story does a great job of revealing secrets gradually, enough to captivate the mind as whodunit theories swirled.

“Everyone needs secrets. They keep us vulnerable.”

“Why would anyone want to be vulnerable?”

“To keep their guard up, so they don’t get sloppy.”

The story takes turn after turn as we inch closer to unraveling the mystery. The pacing is where the real magic lies as Fitzpatrick continues to throw us into one heart-pounding scene after the other. I did struggle a little bit with Britt as a character. I couldn’t understand her motivations as they related to others in the novel, such as Korbie and her ex-boyfriend Calvin. But other than that, I think the story does a great job of keeping the reader engaged and in a state of delicious suspense. The story explores notions of trust, friendship, history and straight-up gut instinct, as the author ratchets up teen angst, even amidst a life and death predicament. If you’re a fan of suspense, this is a great book to devour.

“I’d tricked myself into believing I knew him. I’d look past the hardened criminal and invented a romantic tale of a tortured hero in need of redemption. What a grave error in judgment.”

I read her Hush Hush series a couple years ago and liked it. I’ve been looking forward to reading this one. My friend Nereyda has been DYING to read Black Ice. So glad you enjoyed it. It sounds pretty good! Great review, Vilma!
