Heather Lyons’ The Collectors’ Society has been one of my favorite books of the year. It’s style and inventiveness was a breath of fresh air. It was a story that gripped me entirely with adventure, romance and fantasy. The character development was rich and I found myself intrigued by its illustrious cast from the very beginning. One of my favorite characters in the story was Jace… the White King of Wonderland. His tale is heart wrenching and I find myself wanting to know more more more about this fierce, brave, but sort of tortured soul. I think it’s perfect that I am kicking off this character tour with Jace, whom I know you will fall in love with in The Collectors’ Society.
From the author of the Fate series and The Deep End of the Sea comes a fantastical romantic adventure that has Alice tumbling down the strangest rabbit hole yet.
After years in Wonderland, Alice has returned to England as an adult, desperate to reclaim sanity and control over her life. An enigmatic gentleman with an intriguing job offer too tempting to resist changes her plans for a calm existence, though. Soon, she’s whisked to New York and initiated into the Collectors’ Society, a secret organization whose members confirm that famous stories are anything but straightforward and that what she knows about the world is only a fraction of the truth.
It’s there she discovers villains are afoot—ones who want to shelve the lives of countless beings. Assigned to work with the mysterious and alluring Finn, Alice and the rest of the Collectors’ Society race against a doomsday clock in order to prevent further destruction . . . but will they make it before all their endings are erased?
This is the first book in the Collectors’ Society series.
“Then you have come to exactly the right place,” the White King says quietly, firmly,
“as, no matter what, you always have me to come to.”
✦✦✦
“A bumbling, old fool,” the White King muses. “
And a chess piece to boot. I’m afraid I must disappoint, Doctor.”
✦✦✦
Another horn trills and then blares long and hard. The White King lifts my blade into the air. “I will accept no failures on our behalves today. There are innocents held by the Hearts, and we cannot allow the atrocities plaguing Wonderland to touch their lives for any longer than they already have.”
A rousing cheer sends the nesting borogroves screaming from nearby trees.
“Do not fear. Do not falter. Go with the singular purpose that every innocent life deserves our protection.”
A song lifts from the clearing, of days of old and in a language lost to many Wonderlanders. And yet understanding sinks meaningfully within every chest that hears the intonations. The knights sing, and as they do, goose pimples break out along my arms. The last time I heard this song, my knights were the one to sing it, and it moves me more than I can say.
Heather Lyons has always had a thing for words—She’s been writing stories since she was a kid. In addition to writing, she’s also been an archaeologist and a teacher. Heather is a rabid music fan, as evidenced by her (mostly) music-centric blog, and she’s married to an even larger music snob. They’re happily raising three kids who are mini music fiends who love to read and be read to.
