Hats: Not Just To Keep Your Head Warm

Hats: Not Just To Keep Your Head Warm

I’m Renée Carlino and I’m addicted to hats. It’s definitely a style piece I can talk about endlessly because I’ve been collecting them for years. Here’s a small portion of my hat collection now.

If you follow me on Instagram, (reneecarlino1), you’ve likely been privy to my compulsive hat-buying behaviors. I’ll admit I’m not always wearing a hat, but I often think I should be. It’s by far my favorite accessory.

I like jewelry, but I can take it or leave it.

Belts? I have one… exactly one and I’ve had it for fifteen years.

Scarves, I probably have a few too many for a Southern California dweller, but hats, they are a plenty and put to good use on my head.

Often times I’ll talk about hats to someone and they’ll say, “They don’t really look right on me.”

YOU ARE BUYING THE WRONG HATS!

I promise.

BASEBALL CAPS

Baseball caps, let’s start with those. There are few people in this world that look terrible in a baseball cap. Challenge me on that and I will find one that fits you right. Wear it anywhere. Wear it to the grocery store. Bad hair, don’t care, throw on a baseball cap.

I like the kind with the mesh in the back when I’m exercising or when it’s hot out because it let’s my head breathe. Here’s my favorite Brixton snapback cap ….

… and this rust cap is one I’ve had on my radar.

FESTIVAL HATS + LARGE BRIM HATS

These are different than something you’d wear to Churchill Downs. This is what you wear when you’re sipping craft bear at an outdoor brewery concert. It’s when you’re wearing jeans or a casual dress and you want to keep the sun out of your face, but still want to look stylish. Or wear it at night, while you’re sipping tequila like I’m doing here.

There are many variations. I have a festival hat that my sister says I look like Guido Sarducci in. I don’t care, I love it. Some brims are larger than others, you just have to find what likes right on you. I always like when there is a leather band, strap or tie in the back for a little extra added flair.

FEDORAS

Oh the fedora, how I love thee. And there are so many different kinds of fedoras. You have to find the one that’s right for your face and head. I never liked the kind with the tiny brim; they don’t fit me well. I like one with a bit of a larger brim. People think there is one style of fedora. No there are many. Here are two of my favorites.

THE STRAW HAT

The beach hat, the big brimmed—I’m wearing my Audrey Hepburn sunglasses in a 50’s throwback swimsuit-kind of hat. I have two casual beach hats I wear and three other more glam straw hats. It just depends on what you’re wearing. If you’re wearing shorts and a grimey T-shirt, your Audrey Hepburn thing might not work as well as the smaller straw hat. Straw hats keep you cool and keep the sun out off your precious skin.

THE PAPERBOY HAT

Just cause you’re a woman doesn’t mean you can’t sport a paperboy hat, they’re super cute. I feel a little ACDC in one sometimes, or maybe limo driver, so I wear it when I’m driving around town rocking to Hell’s Bells. I discovered that hats are pretty unisex for the most part so don’t be afraid to look online at guy’s hats too.

Hats off to Vilma for combining so many of our favorite things on one blog! You can check out some of the hats I’ve talked about below, and be sure to check out my upcoming book, releasing August 15th, WISH YOU WERE HERE. Enter to win a signed copy HERE.
