Synopsis ⬇️

I’m a longtime reader of the Will Trent series and this latest was sooo good. I could not put it down—which is to be expected in any Karin Slaughter thriller! This can be read as a standalone, but of course knowing the history makes the story so much richer.

What’s it about? A harrowing new crime dredges up Dr. Sarah Linton’s traumatic past. As Sarah, along with Will and Faith, dig into what happened to the latest young woman, echoes of what happened to her become increasingly apparent. Not only that, but more women are in danger if they don’t figure it all out.

It’s a new favorite in the series, underscored by the unshakable bonds between the characters we love, which buoy the weight of a narrative steeped in the violence and horror of its crimes. If you’re looking for a one-weekend binge read, look no further!

I’ve been reading (and loving) Lisa Jewell for years and this latest is a new fave! It’s a dark, twisty, unsetting thriller about two women whose paths cross in ways that ultimately upend both their lives. Podcaster Alix Summer and Josie Fair meet at a pub the night of their 45th birthday. Josie, a seemingly unassuming mother of two, is immediately drawn to Alix, whose life appears to shimmer in a way hers does not. Days later, they bump into each other again at Alix’s children’s school. In what feels like fate, Josie decides Alix is exactly the person she needs at this crossroads in her life. After binging Alix’s podcasts, Josie brazenly suggests she consider recording a podcast about her—someone at the cusp of great changes. With every dark secret Josie shares, Alix realizes she should sever ties and walk away, but she can’t—needing to know the whole story which would inevitably leave a trail of deaths in its wake.

Lisa Jewell delivers such an addictive read teeming with surprises. Unreliable characters call into question everything you read, especially as the story crescendos to a shocking climax. 🚨 NEW FAVORITE BOOK ALERT 🚨 I finished this $🚨 NEW FAVORITE BOOK ALERT 🚨 I finished this book a few days ago and I loved it so much! You all probably remember how much I gushed and gushed about THE HACIENDA last year and I had sky-high expectations for VAMPIRES OF EL NORTE. @isabelcanas_ totally delivered once again! This one felt particularly cool to read as it takes place in 1940s Rio Grande Valley, specifically Matamoros, where I grew up. Having an anchor into the narrative, with language you’re familiar with, really helped immerse me immediately. The story is about two childhood sweethearts—Nena and Néstor—who are separated after Néstor believes Nena to be dead. Nena was attacked by a monster in the night, and crushed by the weight of her death, Néstor (a vaquero) flees the ranch owned by Nena’s family. Nine years later, fate, and the invasion of Mexico by the ‘Yanquis,’ brings them back together to fight both soldier and beasts alike. Richly imagined and chillingly suspenseful, Cañas forges a story that’s unrelentingly captivating. Smart, authentic, lush, detailed, and wholly original, this is a perfect blend of history and horror, romance and suspense. One of my favorite books this year. Two friends revive a decades-old curse in this latest dark thriller from the author of other personal faves—MEXICAN GOTHIC and VELVET WAS THE NIGHT. I loved it, and love her ability to immerse you in a world, in a time, so vividly and meticulously wrought. It's a visceral, almost textural layer to her storytelling which is instantly transportive.

The story takes place in early 1990s Mexico City with main characters Montserrat (a reclusive sound editor) and Tristán (an aging actor from Matamoros - shout out to where I grew up!) meeting a once-famous horror film director who convinces them to reverse a curse. The trio, however, unleashes something far more terrifying, awaking dormant magic that wreaks havoc for those involved once again.

Moreno-Garcia delivers a sinister story of sorcery, suspense and history. Well-drawn characters, vivid worldbuilding and references to real films, actors and occultists help steep us in the narrative and the result is a riveting, spine-chilling must read. 5 🌟 !!!

While it felt like a bit of a departure from Ware’s usual style, she kept me on the edge of my seat to see just how it all would end. It’s a great one-weekend binge.

➖THE STRANGER: A portrait artist struggles with temporary face blindness after an accident, in this heartwarming and funny romance. This is such an endearing, feel-good story about hope, friendship, and found family. Have been loving Katherine Center’s books (check out THE BODYGUARD too)!

Some exciting new thriller 📚 releases today including THE ONLY ONE LEFT by @riley.sager! I’m such a big fan of Riley’s books and this gothic thriller didn’t disappoint! In this latest, a caregiver digs into a past murder when she’s assigned to the town’s own Lizzie Borden.

After her own controversy, home health aide Kit McDeere moves into Hope’s End—the crumbling mansion at the edge of a cliff. There, she must look after the elderly Lenora Hope, who was once accused of murdering her entire family. Curiosity over what transpired consumes Kit, especially as Lenora and she begin to communicate via an old typewriter. Her time at Hope’s End takes an inescapable turn one night when Lenora offers, “I want to tell you everything.”

The vibe of the book is akin to Sager’s HOME BEFORE DARK (which I loved)—the derelict house of horrors dripping with decades-old secrets of murder, greed, envy, and forbidden romance. It’s rife with twists and turns you won’t see coming!

Yesterday I worked outdoors for a change in perspective and it was a great end to the week. I also did a little bit of shopping and finished reading HAPPY PLACE by my fave @emilyhenrywrites (true story: while taking this picture, someone yelled out “I’m reading that book and it’s fantastic!”) 👏🏼

Today, first, ☕️ of course, then 💃 class, then headed for some K-BBQ for lunch, and some 🍹 in the sunshine ☀️

Loved this romantic thriller by @kristenashleybooks—the second (standalone) installment in the Misted Pines series. The story opens when an FBI agent tracks a murderer to small-town Misted Pines, and in the process becomes far more entangled than expected. As he investigates the details of the latest murder, something isn’t quite right, and he must partner with locals like Cade Bohannan and the victim’s employer, Lucinda (Cin) Bonner to untangle what’s really at play… especially since danger still lurks in the shadows.
