Review: Opposition (#5, Lux) by Jennifer L. Armentrout

My Thoughts

An electrifying conclusion to one of my favorite paranormal series!

5stars

Synopsis

OPPOSITION-500pxKaty knows the world changed the night the Luxen came.

She can’t believe Daemon welcomed his race or stood by as his kind threatened to obliterate every last human and hybrid on Earth. But the lines between good and bad have blurred, and love has become an emotion that could destroy her—could destroy them all.

Daemon will do anything to save those he loves, even if it means betrayal.

They must team with an unlikely enemy if there is any chance of surviving the invasion. But when it quickly becomes impossible to tell friend from foe, and the world is crumbling around them, they may lose everything— even what they cherish most—to ensure the survival of their friends…and mankind.

War has come to Earth. And no matter the outcome, the future will never be the same for those left standing.

My Review

It’s always bittersweet to read the final book in a series, and I always begin reading with a mix of excitement and trepidation. And with a much-loved series like Lux, I desperately hoped it to would meet every expectation. I’m happy to say that Jennifer Armentrout has once again proven she can end a series phenomenally. Opposition delivers an epic finale that had my heart racing, tears threatening to spill, and ultimately, me grinning widely. I loved it. Fans of the series will relish in the action, humor and romance and I promise you’ll be on a happy high by its heartfelt end.

“In the last two days, more Luxen had fallen from the sky. They’d kept coming and coming like an endless stream of falling stars, and then there was… nothing.”

When Origin ended, the destructive chaos in Vegas resulted in the Luxen being outed—the world had finally seen them disrobed in all their brightly lit glory. A war had been waged as the promise of more Luxen endangered their already fragile existence. We pick up right where we left off as that ominous promise morphed into frightening reality. And as soon as bright lights covered the sky, Daemon, Dawson and Dee were gone, leaving Katy with Luc, Archer and Beth, in the dark uncertainty of what was to come.

With each day that Daemon was gone, Katy’s unease grew, wondering when he would return and if he’d come back the same. When grey eyes meet green once again, Katy is shocked to discover that Daemon had embraced the arriving Luxen… those who work to annihilate the world of every human and hybrid. But was it real? After everything they had been through could Daemon really toss it all aside for allegiance with his race?

The story in Opposition is really about the blurring sides of a war. Suddenly the delineations between enemies and friends are nebulous. Through alternating perspectives, we understand what’s happening through both Daemon and Katy’s point of view. Daemon is willing to do whatever it takes to save those he loves the most. And it’s that intensity… that unfailing loyalty, that makes me love Daemon so much.

“You haven’t lost me, Kitten. You could never lose me.”

I love that we were able to see and experience how much Daemon and Katy love each other in this book, but those passionate moments are also tempered by their one-of-a-kind banter… that sexy wit that makes it all so them, so true to who they are.

“That’s what I love about you most. Well, that and I am a really big fan of your sweet body, but your heart? Yeah, that completes the package of you, wraps it up with a nice little bow. It makes you perfect to me.”

I can also tell you that Katy kicks some serious butt in this final installment and there is plenty of opportunity for her to do so. The story is jam-packed with heart-pounding, action scenes as Katy, Daemon and the rest of the gang try to figure out a solution as the situation gets dire.

“Things went from oh crap to FML in a matter of seconds. We were seriously screwed very which way from Sunday.”

They must find a way to work with an unlikely enemy if they even have a chance at stopping the invading Luxen from complete destruction. And of course, there are more things that are sure to go wrong instead of right.

“… this was a risky and unreliable planone held together by duct tape, a lick, and a whole of wishing for good luck.”

This story is all about shadows and light. Friends and Foe. Love and Hate. Family you were born with and family that took you in. It’s about figuring out all those dynamics and working together with a motley crew of people to beat a common problem. It was truly the perfect finale. I giggled and smiled and swooned and loved every minute of it. It was lighthearted, gut wrenching and heartfelt as the author guided the roller coaster of emotions expertly until the very end. With Covenant and Lux concluded, I anxiously await the continuation of The Dark Elements series as well as the Titan series next year!
