Review: Ready to Fall by Daisy Prescott

My Thoughts

Refreshingly real and wonderfully entertaining
with the sexiest lumberjack ever!

A captivating story about embracing the kind of life one desires, falling into the right kind of love with the right kind of person.

Synopsis

ready to fallWhen you fall, you fall hard…

Every girl dreams of meeting a man like John Day. Tall, dark, and handsome is an understatement. With rugged good looks, his ever present plaid shirt, and a dog named Babe, John is a modern alpha male lumberjack in more ways than one.

Lurking beneath the flannel and beard could be the heart of a romantic. Or is John a wolf in flannel clothing?

After his favorite neighbor rents out her cabin for the winter, John finds himself playing fireman and tour guide to Diane Watson, a beautiful brunette with her own messy past and recent battle scars.

Will he be ready to fall in love? Or will he fall back into his old, flirty ways?

Hold onto your heart… and get ready to fall with John Day.

My Review

Holy hot lumberjacks!!! Ladies, grab on to your flannel because you will fall hard for John Day. This 6′ 4″, dark, bearded, handsome man is real and relatable, sexy and swoony. Told entirely through his point-of-view, John shares his story of how he reluctantly fell for a girl, finally letting go of the ties that tethered him to the past… to a way of life that really didn’t fulfill him. This is the second novel I read by Daisy Prescott and the second novel I have loved. This author has a unique writing style that seems really honest and easygoing. The moments are never overdone, never too extreme one way or the other… they are perfectly balanced, with exactly the right kind of pacing. There was even a time in the book where I thought, okay, I think this is where we need to start seeing some drama again, and literally, the very next page something happened. I am so impressed at her ability to take me through the story in exactly the right way, with characters that are real and with a story that is thoroughly engaging. It’s so very refreshing to read and I truly enjoyed every minute of it.

John Day is a man comfortable in his own skin. He loves his life. Loves Whidbey Island. Loves his dog Babe and his cabin by the beach.  He knows what to expect out of every day, working as a logger, hanging out with his friends and spending time with his girlfriend, Kelly, who is in the midst of a divorce. He likes to keep things casual and easy and that’s the type of life that has worked for him for so long. But things begin to take a turn for the ugly unexpected when he discovers Kelly’s ex is less of an ex than he thought. There’s no way he’s playing second fiddle, and certainly not the kind of guy to step in the way of a marriage. Then, he meets a stranger who is renting his neighbor’s house for the winter. Diane seems sad and broken and soon after he learns that she too, is going through a divorce.  She doesn’t know anyone on the island and as much as he wants to be a friend, his recent troubles with Kelly make him reluctant.

“The last thing I needed was another woman in my life going through a divorce. Divorces were messy, and like marriage, avoided at all costs.”

However, as neighbors, they begin to get to know each other and they begin to slowly become friends. Diane is having a tough time. Her husband was awful and her confidence has waned as a result. I love, however, that you see some fire in her. She’s vulnerable, but not weak. She’s feisty and witty and direct despite her broken heart.  She’s from New York and new to the island vibe, but somehow, John and her work as friends and they make a pact to keep things friendly… to not muck things up with all things relationshipy. They’ll hang out, have fun, enjoy each other’s company, free of all complicated encumbrances.

“The thing I’d learned about pacts in my life so far was they were made to be broken. I was curious to see how long this one would last and who’d break it first.”

I loved seeing them spend time together. John is six feet of rugged manly man and very flirty and she just flirts and zings right back. Their banter is effortless and fun and you can almost feel them begin to soften around each other. Both of them are very different people than to whom they are accustomed and there’s something striking about that. John is able to instill confidence in Diane, making her feel sexy and cared about, opening up her world to a simpler, freer life. Diane, in turn, begins to chip away at the wall that John has built around his heart over the years… finding the goodness and vulnerability in his rough and rugged exterior. I could almost physically feel their attraction intensify, feel their hearts open to one another, feel them fall in love and fall hard. But at the first real taste of happiness, John’s insecurities take control. Would he ever let himself be open enough to love and be loved?

“I wasn’t sure you knew how to fall or would ever be ready. Or would let yourself.”

Once again, I just really loved everything about the story… the protagonists, the flow, the background of the island… it was perfect.  I connected with the characters immediately and wanted their happily ever after. Now, I should note I met our sexy lumberjack in Daisy Prescott’s debut novel, Geoducks Are For Lovers (read my 5-star review) and was immediately drawn to John Day and so I was so happy to read his book. Geoducks and Ready to Fall can be read as standalone novels, although I highly recommend you pick up Geoducks as well, which is a wonderful second-chance romance with a witty cast of characters that had me grinning throughout. I look forward to reading more of what this author writes, especially since she has such a unique and invigorating style which frankly just makes me feel good and warm and all those things I just love about reading.

“I wanted it all. It wasn’t until I fell in love with Diane I believed I could have everything.”

“You think I’m beautiful?”

“You are. There’s no thinking about it. It’s a fact.”

“You’re just being nice.”

“I’m not and I’ll prove it.” I flagged over our dreadlocked and Patchouli bathed waiter. “Hey, what’s your name?”

“Gabriel.”

“Nice to meet you, Gabriel. I’m John and this is Diane.”

Gabriel gaped at me like I was crazy, but said hi.

“Do you think Diane is beautiful?” I asked, ignoring Diane’s embarrassed groans.

Gabriel scrutinized, his eyes lingering on her face before sliding down her curvy frame highlighted by her sweater.

“Yeah, sure,” he said, not sounding exactly enthused.

“See? A neutral and unbiased opinion. Thanks, Gabriel.”

“Sure, man,” he said before wandering back toward the kitchen.

I smiled at Diane, who looked as if she wished the floor would open up and swallow her.

“Do you really think he was going to say no to my face? That completely doesn’t count!”

“Fine. We can do a wider survey and ask everyone on the ferry too.”

“Please don’t. I get it.” Her crossed arms and defensive posture disagreed with her words of agreement.

“Somewhere in there is a confident woman. I know it. I’ve seen glimpses of her. She’s sexy and she knows it.”

“Ugh, I feel like a loser who needs self-improvement lectures. Can we drop it?” Her tone was light, but she’d closed up again same as she had in the bookstore.

“There’s only one way to prove it to you.”

She crossed her arms and stared at me. “Prove what exactly?”

“You are desirable and sexy and beautiful.”

“More surveys?”

“No.”

I leaned over the table and took her chin in my hand. Her mouth opened slightly with her surprise. I studied her eyes before leaning closer, as close as we were before. “By doing what I should have done in the bookstore.”

I kissed her. It wasn’t hard or deep. More of a soft whisper with only enough pressure I could feel her begin to return the kiss before I pulled away and slid back in my chair.

Slowly, she opened her eyes, but remained speechless.

“You’re beautiful and deserve to be kissed.”

About Daisy Prescott

Daisy Prescott

Before writing contemporary romantic comedies, I worked in the world of art, auctions, antiques, and home decor. I earned a degree in Art History despite being convinced I would major in English and endured a brief stint as a film theory graduate student. Over the years I’ve acquired many titles: baker, art educator, antiques dealer, content manager, blue ribbon pie maker, fangirl, blogger, freelance writer, gardener, wife, and pet mom are a few of them.

Born and raised in San Diego, my husband and I currently live in a real life Stars Hollow in the Boston suburbs with our dog, Hubbell, and an imaginary house goat.

Ready to Fall, my second novel, will be released on December 17, 2013 and features John Day, the hot, sexy neighbor in Geoducks. I’m busy researching my next novel, which will not feature any bivalves.
