Synopsis

My Review
With Retrieval and Transfer, author Aly Martinez captivates us with two stories, two couples whose lives entwine in unexpected ways. Their stories, although inherently different, impart a desperate, ruthless need to hold on to those they love the most, to that elusive-but-consuming sense of belonging—no matter who or what impedes that.
“A love like ours wasn’t measured in years, distance, or time apart. It was never-ending.”
We first meet Elisabeth and Roman, two people who had loved deeply, fiercely. A marriage that felt as crazy and uncontained as it did right… until unforeseen loss shattered everything, fracturing a future that seemed destined for forever. They each surrendered to grief, losing each other in the process.
Two years they spent apart, divorced, trying to fill an impossible void without the other, until an unexpected situation pushes them together once more, bringing them back to the very past that broke them.
Despite their time apart, it quickly became clear emotions hadn’t waned for either of them, and Roman swore this time he wouldn’t let her go, wouldn’t give up on them.
“I realized it had been a God’s-honest miracle I’d been able to breathe a single breath in the two years I’d lived without her. It was also then that I decided those days were done.”
Even as Elisabeth and Roman find their way back to each other, they encounter surprises that change the direction of their lives. It’s then we meet Clare, a woman who’s been surviving hell, a mother who has tried to shield her young daughter from a man who deals lessons in blows.
“I didn’t live in a world where I was allowed to focus on anything but keeping myself alive and my daughter safe.”
Elisabeth and Roman are determined to help Clare escape the clutches of her dangerous husband, even if it means stepping into the line of fire. Luckily, they aren’t alone, and there’s someone else determined to fight for Clare and her daughter. And just as Roman once swore to himself about Elisabeth, that man swore he wouldn’t let Clare go, wouldn’t let her hurt be it from bruises or a broken heart.
“Letting her go was no longer an option.”
Their story is far more complicated than I can say, far more dangerous with surprising twists along the way. I loved how quickly I was able to read both books, they were well paced and brimming with the kind of intensity that keeps you turning the pages. There were tender moments juxtaposed with frightening ones, a great balance as we sped towards the heart-pounding culmination of their journeys. Love, forgiveness, friendship, survival and resilience… these books packed it all and wrapped it up in an addictive, sexy and suspenseful package. This is the first I read of Aly Martinez and I’m sure it won’t be the last.
