Review: Sentinel (#5, Covenant) by Jennifer L. Armentrout

My Thoughts

Action-packed. Emotionally charged.
Exciting. Exceeding Expectations.

The perfect conclusion to one of my favorite all-time series!
I wouldn’t change a thing.

Synopsis

SentinelIt’s a beautiful day for a war.

As the mortal world slowly slips into chaos of the godly kind, Alexandria Andros must overcome a stunning defeat that has left her shaken and in doubt of their ability to end this war once and for all.

And with all the obstacles between Alex and her happily-ever-after with the swoonworthy Aiden St. Delphi, they must now trust a deadly foe as they travel deep into the Underworld to release one of the most dangerous gods of all time.

In the stunning, action-packed climax to the bestselling Covenant series, Alex must face a terrible choice: the destruction of everything and everyone she holds dear… or the end of herself.

My Review

“It was time to do this, to end this. Everything came down to this battle, and not just for us, but for the unknowing mortals too.”

Holy Daimon babies! The stress of the last book. The finale. The close. The goodbye. Despite my unremitting confidence in Jennifer L. Armentrout (she has yet to let me down), I was admittedly anxious to read Sentinel. After the debacle with Allegiant, I wanted a series I adored to end absolutely perfect. And once again, Jennifer delivered. It was perfect. It had all the action, all the romance, all the snark, and all the wit I desperately desired with unexpected surprises that left me holding my breath and in tears by the last page read.

At the end of the fourth book, Apollyon, Alex Andros was brutally torn apart by Ares, the god of War, and was consumed by so much pain that she secretly begged for death. She was scarred and broken inside and out, waking up to discover Aiden’s torn-up hands, Marcus’ beaten face and perhaps most significantly, a sense of wrongness and numbness… an emotional paralysis where all she felt was fear and despair. The world was at war… at the precipice of godly domination. Despite having gone through a tumultuous several weeks, she’s on edge and can’t seem to shake the dread that consumes her.

“I think he was worried about pushing things too far for the time being since I was obviously rocking a first-class ticket to certifiable insanity.”

One of the primary elements I love about this book is the humor. Alex is one of my absolute favorite female characters ever. She’s not afraid to kick some butt and despite the bleakness of the situations in which she inevitably finds herself, she manages through it all with incomparable wit, boldness and attitude. She’s a fierce, take-nothing-from-nobody kind of girl with a lot of heart and a lot of fight within.

“Some people say when life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. But when life gives you one seriously ticked off god gunning for your ass,  you prepare for war and you hope for paradise.”

There to temper Alex’s intensity and impulsivity is the swoon-worthy Sentinel… the unrivaled perfection that is Aiden St. Delphi. There’s a reason he is one of my top book boyfriends… actually there are many reasons and allow me to count the ways! Aiden is the consummate counterbalance for Alex. Whereas as Alex embodies the act first, think later philosophy, Aiden is that introspective protagonist who is like a continuous balm that soothes, always saying the exact right thing at the moment in which it is most needed. He is unfailingly supportive, deeply passionate and unabashedly loving. I loved that Jennifer weaved in moments that allowed us to reminisce about their time together… how they first met and all they have gone through to get to where they are. I really feel them as a couple. Their love is believable… palpable and healthy.

“Our love had never been easy. As a pure-blood, he was untouchable to  me even though I was the Apollyon, and even know he risked everything to be with me. He was my strength when I needed him to be, my friend when I needed someone to talk me down, my equal in a world where by law I would always be less than him, and honest to gods, he was the love of my life.”

Much of this book focuses around Alex, what she’s feeling, what’s she’s had to and is having to go through and the difficult choices she must make for the greater good, perhaps even at the expense of her own life. How the end will unfurl is nebulous and so much of it is out of her control. With battle worries swirling, her relationship with Aiden grounds her, but then suddenly becomes unsettled when our favorite bad boy Apollyon comes back.

And gods! When Seth returns, he’s ready to rile things up. Without divulging what happens, I absolutely loved the way Seth’s character arc was realized. It was everything I never knew I hoped for.  He, like Alex, is burdened with the consequences of his actions and similarly has a critical choice  to make. Beautiful, blonde, dangerous and unpredictable, Seth must first overcome his addiction to the power of the First and no one is ready to trust him.

“…that power… there’s nothing like it, Alex. I became addicted to it, and it blinded me to everything else. It was my weakness. It is my weakness.”

The battle plan for the Army of Awesomeness is devised, and some might say doomed, as they have to journey to the bowels of Hades’ Underworld, resurrect a Titan, control aforementioned Titan, survive a road trip with Deacon, break into the heavily guarded location where Ares resides, find him and kick the god of War’s ass into oblivion without getting decimated… again. So yea… crap on a cracker as Alex would say. What ensues is an action-packed, nail-biting, tear-inducing battle to the end with a conclusion that left me blurry-eyed, mouth agape, gasping and then smiling like a fool. LOVED. IT.

All in all, it’s a bittersweet experience to finish the final book in a series that I have truly loved. The story, the writing, the pacing, the characters… all perfect. I won’t soon forget any of the supporting cast either. I think that is one of the aspects that strengthens the series… the secondary characters are as interesting as the protagonists themselves and I found myself really connected with each of them. Caleb, Marcus, Deacon, Luke, Solos… everyone… even the gods, are just integral threads to a story so well woven and so well concluded that I just can’t seem to let it go. Absolutely must-read series.

“I just don’t want you to feel that way, because I love you. I’m in love with you. Forever and ever, and all the corny things I can attach to that.”
