Spotlight + Giveaway: The Book of Life by Deborah Harkness

It began with absence and desire. It began with blood and fear. It began with a discovery of witches.

When anyone asks me what my most anticipated book of the year is, it takes me no time to answer The Book of Life by Deborah Harkness. The All Souls trilogy is one of my all-time favorite series for a immeasurable list of reasons, big and small. Overall, I love how the books are so incredibly well written and well researched. I love that the story is imbued with a one-of-a-kind mix of magic and science, history and fiction, suspense and mystery. Frankly, these three novels represent everything I endeavor to find in a book. Add to all that goodness, a forbidden romance between a vampire and a witch that transcends the ages, battles the world and defies what everyone thought possible, and well, you have my undivided attention.

The series imparts the story of Diana Bishop and Matthew Clairmont… a story that begins between two academics–two creatures–in the Bodleian library’s reading room at Oxford University. A much-desired and long-lost magical book is found, then lost again, inciting a brutal race to re-locate it and uncover its otherworldly secrets. Diana and Matthew’s story takes us on quite an adventure, as we work to unveil the secrets hidden in blood, history, alchemy and magic.

I am nearly done with The Book of Life and can tell you that it has already exceeded my very high expectations. It’s a bittersweet feeling to finish a series I have loved so much, but I think fans of the first two books will love every moment of it. The Book of Life, the final book in the trilogy, will be out July 15th. The first two books, A Discovery of Witches and Shadow of Night, are currently on sale, at almost half off their regular price. Click on the images below to purchase from Amazon U.S.

About Deborah Harkness

deborahharknessMy life has been a series of left turns that nevertheless took me in the right direction (though it didn’t always seem so at the time). I went to college to be a theater major and ended up studying the Renaissance. I went to grad school to become a college administrator and loved to teach so much I became a college professor instead. I thought I wanted to be a Tudor-Stuart historian, and found myself a historian of science. I started blogging because a friend needed help on a project in 2006 and am still blogging about wine today. I started writing a novel in the fall of 2008, and it became a New York Times Bestseller in February 2011: A DISCOVERY OF WITCHES. The second volume in the All Souls Trilogy, SHADOW OF NIGHT, came out in July 2012 and debuted at #1 on the NEW YORK TIMES Bestseller’s List. What’s next? The final volume of the trilogy, of course – THE BOOK OF LIFE.

Love reading from someone as enthusiastic about this trilogy as I am. It is not an understatement to say this trilogy has been a big part of my life since 2011. I sincerely hope that this is adapted to the screen (big or little) and that Richard Armitage is cast as Matthew Clairmont! You can check out the campaign here: http://www.armitage4clairmont.com
