Review: Sweet Filthy Boy (#1, Wild Seasons) by Christina Lauren

My Thoughts

Fun, sweet and irresistibly sexy!

sweet filthy boyOne-night stands are supposed to be with someone convenient, or wickedly persuasive, or regrettable. They aren’t supposed to be with someone like him.

But after a crazy Vegas weekend celebrating her college graduation—and terrified of the future path she knows is a cop-out—Mia Holland makes the wildest decision of her life: follow Ansel Guillaume—her sweet, filthy fling—to France for the summer and just…play.

When feelings begin to develop behind the provocative roles they take on, and their temporary masquerade adventures begin to feel real, Mia will have to decide if she belongs in the life she left because it was all wrong, or in the strange new one that seems worlds away.

My Review

This book was so much fun to read. It was all kinds of sexy, witty and adventurous. Wild and sweet. Romantic and super steamy. The series follows three best friends who meet three hot guys in Vegas, while celebrating their graduation. This is their last hurrah before dealing with the reality of grown-up life.  And well, you know what they say about Vegas… A night full of too much drinking and scandalous partying leaves the six of them with some unforgettable memories (some which they’ve yet to remember) and some situations they must work to correct. Mia Holland is the most reserved of the group. She’s the girl who lives in her head… who does thoughtful, and not wild and serendipitous. She’s getting ready to pack up and move to Boston for graduate school in a field she cares nothing about. Constantly scrutinized by her father, Mia follows the path he sets for her while tossing her own aspirations by the wayside.

During their night out in Vegas, Mia spots a gorgeous man across the room, whom she later meets. Ansel is a gorgeous, witty French guy who brings out a side of her that’s fun and brave. Mia pretends she’s someone else, someone flirtier and wilder, to really let herself go and when she does, the morning brings all kinds of surprises as she finds herself tangled in barely-there sheets. In addition, she realizes that in one crazy night, she did more than bare her body… she bared sides of herself that she keeps under lock and key. And even when morning comes, there’s a part of her that isn’t ready to leave it all behind.

“I want to love all of my life as much as I love this night.”

Ansel is enamored with everything about Mia and so he does everything to convince her to spend the summer in France with him. Ansel is impulsive, sexy and funny… seemingly carefree. So he doesn’t think with his head when he asks Mia to go, he thinks with his heart. Mia can’t believe she’s considering it, but spontaneity reigns when she embarks on an adventure that would change everything.

“What we know is dimly lit bars, playful banter, the clean, crisp sheets of hotel rooms. What we know is the unrequited possibility, the temptation of the idea. The make-believe. The adventure. But when you choose the adventure, it becomes real life.”

Arriving in France (and just barely with a trip that had me dying in laughter), everything suddenly feels unsteady and unknown. Their banter and easy comfort begins to falter. The stark reality is wholly different than the idealized adventure.

“It’s just now that I realize I’m still waiting to learn anything about him, other than what he looks like with no clothes on.”

Their time together is charged with emotion, spent desperately wanting each other but needing the actual time together to build something real. Mia must stop wallowing in her thoughts to allow fate and heart to take over and let things happen. But when she finally frees herself to be someone else, to really be brave enough to be the person she wants to be, things start to happen as the chemistry heats up between them.

“He makes me feel safe exploring all the ways I can wrestle my way out of my own head.”

And suddenly this game, this trip, and this desire that burns so brightly begins to feel all too real. Trouble ensues when secrets are revealed and we learn more about Ansel. Both Mia and Ansel need to get to know each other fully, without lies and hesitation, to see if what they have could truly work long term.

“Ansel was as scared to face his past as I was to face my future.”

This was simply a treat to read. Delicously sexy and humorous with romance and heart at its center. I actually really loved that their beginning was sort of shaky. It wasn’t insta-love despite them being so attracted to each other. Their initial time together was awkward (as I think it should’ve been), lending the story more credibility. So looking forward to seeing what kind of trouble the next set of characters will bring to the page.

“I know that I love him, that what we have is real, and that I probably loved him that first second I saw him from across the room.”
