🚨 NEW FAVORITE BOOK ALERT 🚨 I finished this $🚨 NEW FAVORITE BOOK ALERT 🚨 I finished this book a few days ago and I loved it so much! You all probably remember how much I gushed and gushed about THE HACIENDA last year and I had sky-high expectations for VAMPIRES OF EL NORTE. @isabelcanas_ totally delivered once again! This one felt particularly cool to read as it takes place in 1940s Rio Grande Valley, specifically Matamoros, where I grew up. Having an anchor into the narrative, with language you’re familiar with, really helped immerse me immediately. The story is about two childhood sweethearts—Nena and Néstor—who are separated after Néstor believes Nena to be dead. Nena was attacked by a monster in the night, and crushed by the weight of her death, Néstor (a vaquero) flees the ranch owned by Nena’s family. Nine years later, fate, and the invasion of Mexico by the ‘Yanquis,’ brings them back together to fight both soldier and beasts alike. Richly imagined and chillingly suspenseful, Cañas forges a story that’s unrelentingly captivating. Smart, authentic, lush, detailed, and wholly original, this is a perfect blend of history and horror, romance and suspense. One of my favorite books this year.
