Amazing. An extended piece of poetry that is consumed
me from beginning to end.
Beautiful. Heartfelt. Sincere. Unfortgettable.
It was butterflying perfect!
Synopsis
Layken and Will’s love has managed to withstand the toughest of circumstances and the young lovers, now married, are beginning to feel safe and secure in their union. As much as Layken relishes their new life together, she finds herself wanting to know everything there is to know about her husband, even though Will makes it clear he prefers to keep the painful memories of the past where they belong. Still, he can’t resist his wife’s pleas and so he begins to untangle his side of the story, revealing for the first time his most intimate feelings and thoughts, retelling both the good and bad moments, and sharing a few shocking confessions of his own from the time when they first met.
In This Girl, Will tells the story of their complicated relationship fromhis point of view. Their future rests on how well they deal with the past in this final installment of the beloved Slammed series.
AMAZING. Easily one of my favorite books EVER. I laughed, I cried, I was filled with nostalgic emotion as my heart broke all over again with the struggles Will and Lake had to overcome. I felt giddy with happiness as I grinned widely and warmly at the numerous magical, poetic moments that make these books so special. This Girl completely exceeded my expectations. It was perfect.
This book is SO MUCH more than an alternate POV piece, it’s a look back in time while Will and Lake are on their honeymoon. It’s Lake’s attempt to understand how Will experienced those poignant moments in their lives… what he thought, what he felt.
I was incredibly taken with the intimacy I felt. It seemed like I was a part of this very personal conversation between lovers as they remembered the sweets and the sucks of the past two years. And then to experience what happened through Will’s eyes… it was completely fresh again. He’s so deep, passionate, loving, considerate and responsible for his young 21 years. The restraint and selflessness he exhibited time and time again made me love him even more. And I think that as Layken learned about Will’s feelings and thoughts, she fell a little deeper in love with him too.
It’s amazing to me that without re-reading Slammed and Point of Retreat, I was still quickly inundated with the all-consuming intensity of feeling and vivid memories of the past two books. It felt as if I had just experienced them yesterday… because I really think these books are not just reads… they truly an experience you feel to your heart and soul. I’m not sure why this series has always felt so special to me… I suppose it’s partly to my affinity to poetry (I started writing and publishing poetry very young myself), partly to the originality of the story and irrevocably because of the brilliant writing of Colleen Hoover. Her writing is not verbose, but is laced with a soulful, sincere emotion. She doesn’t say a word more than needed in order to convey intent or feeling.
It was especially heartbreaking to read about the times Will and Lake spent apart when they were so in love with each other. The despondency and pain was palpable, jumping off the page to clench my heart. Despite knowing what happened, I found myself shouting at Will to just screw all responsibility and let it be!
And guess what?! There are new slams in the book! Admittedly, both the old and new slams made me tear up. To me, there is nothing as moving as emotion conveyed through poetry. It’s powerful. Visceral. The piece that Layken performed, called Schooled, is still one of my favorites, along with others like This Girl and Better Than Third.
And finally… the ending… the epilogue… absolutely butterflying perfect!!! It was bittersweet to finish the book. By the time the words THE END flashed on the screen, my eyes were blurry with tears and I couldn’t believe it was over. The last slam is simply beautiful. You will love it.
Because this book moved me so much, I had to pull out my rare 6 star rating! The book exemplifies why Colleen Hoover is one of my favorite authors… she’s a master at evoking feeling in really original, yet direct ways. This book read like an extended piece of poetry that is powerful, moving, original, romantic and absolutely unforgettable. I truly soul-deep love this entire series.
