Arabian Nights

If you love reading books inspired by middle-eastern culture, about magic in desert sands, mythical genies and wishes, here are some titles toย add to your TBR!

  • Rebel of the Sands by Alwyn Hamilton – Bold with a western feel about aย desert-bornย gunslinger on the run.
  • The Wrath and the Dawn by Renee Ahdieh – One of my top two books of 2015; a lush, exotic and intriguing retelling of A Thousand and One Nights, about a Caliph who takes a new bride each day, only to murder them by dawn.
  • The Forbidden Wish by Jessica Khoury – Beautiful Aladdin retelling imparted through the perspective of Zahra, the genie, who falls in love with Aladdin.
  • A Whole New World by Liz Braswell – An exciting, unpredictable retelling of Aladdin.
  • A Thousand Nights by E.K. Johnston – A mystical and intriguing retelling of A Thousand and One Nights.
  • Three Wishes by Kristen Ashley – Emotional second chance romance and one of my all-time faves; a story that features a genie and covers a generation in contemporary times.

But when the job offers start rolling in for herโ€”and oh, they doโ€”Hanna has trouble deciding what she wants, where they should live, and how much she should burden Will with the decision. Craveย by Teresa Mummertย (Available Now)

craveAll I craved was one night to forget about the tragic murder of my brother Marcus. Elijah Malakai seemed like the perfect person to take my mind off everything my family had endured. He was a hunter and for the first time in years, I felt safe.
However, Elijah had his own tragic past. As his secrets unraveled, my world was thrown into turmoil once more.
I had to decide whether or not Elijah was worth the pain his past would bring and if I was strong enough to stand by his side and fight.

Midnight Lilyย by Mia Sheridanย (Mar 01)

Mar-01

Holden Scott is the prince of professional football. At least he was before he lost it all . . . or more to the point, before he threw it all away. Now he’s out of a job, out of the public’s good graces, and perhaps just a little out of his mind. So when a friend offers up his remote lodge in the wilds of Colorado, giving Holden some time away to get his life back on track, he can hardly say no. The last thing he expects is to see a beautiful girl in the woodsโ€”one wearing a white, lace dress who appears in the moonlight, and leaves no footprints behind. Is she a dream? A ghost? A product of his muddled imagination? Or something entirely different?

Midnight Lily is the haunting love story of two lost souls reaching for each other in the dark. A tale of healing, acceptance, and the worlds we create to protect our own hearts. It is a story of being lost, of being found, and of being in the place between.

Standalone novel.

America’s First Daughterย by Stephanie Dray &ย Laura Kamoieย (Mar 01)

America's First DaughterIn a compelling, richly researched novel that draws from thousands of letters and original sources, bestselling authors Stephanie Dray and Laura Kamoie tell the fascinating, untold story of Thomas Jeffersonโ€™s eldest daughter, Martha โ€œPatsyโ€ Jefferson Randolphโ€”a woman who kept the secrets of our most enigmatic founding father and shaped an American legacy.

From her earliest days, Patsy Jefferson knows that though her father loves his family dearly, his devotion to his country runs deeper still. As Thomas Jeffersonโ€™s oldest daughter, she becomes his helpmate, protector, and constant companion in the wake of her motherโ€™s death, traveling with him when he becomes American minister to France.

It is in Paris, at the glittering court and among the first tumultuous days of revolution, that fifteen-year-old Patsy learns about her fatherโ€™s troubling liaison with Sally Hemings, a slave girl her own age. Meanwhile, Patsy has fallen in loveโ€”with her fatherโ€™s protรฉgรฉ William Short, a staunch abolitionist and ambitious diplomat. Torn between love, principles, and the bonds of family, Patsy questions whether she can choose a life as Williamโ€™s wife and still be a devoted daughter.

Her choice will follow her in the years to come, to Virginia farmland, Monticello, and even the White House. And as scandal, tragedy, and poverty threaten her family, Patsy must decide how much she will sacrifice to protect her father’s reputation, in the process defining not just his political legacy, but that of the nation he founded.

Somewhere Out Thereย by Amy Hatvanyย (Mar 01)ย

Somewhere-Out-Amy-Hatvany-March-8What happens when two sisters who were torn apart when their young mother abandoned themโ€”and grew up in tragically different circumstancesโ€”reunite thirty-five years later to find her? For readers who love Jodi Picoult, acclaimed author Amy Hatvany fearlessly explores complex family issues in her gripping, provocative new novel.

Natalie Clark knew never to ask her sensitive adoptive mother questions about her past. She doesnโ€™t even know her birth motherโ€™s nameโ€”only that the young woman signed parental rights over to the state when Natalie was a baby. Now Natalieโ€™s own daughter must complete a family tree project for school, and Natalie is determined to unearth the truth about her roots.

Brooke Walker doesnโ€™t have a family. At least, thatโ€™s what she tells herself after being separated from her mother and her little sister at age four. Having grown up in a state facility and countless foster homes, Brooke survives the only way she knows how, by relying on herself. So when she discovers sheโ€™s pregnant, Brooke faces a heart-wrenching decision: give up her baby or raise the child completely on her own. Scared and confused, she feels lost until a surprise encounter gives her hope for the future.

How do our early experiencesโ€”the subtle and the traumaticโ€”define us as adults? How do we build relationships when weโ€™ve been deprived of real connection? Critically acclaimed author Amy Hatvany considers controversial and complicated questions about childhood through the lens of her finely crafted characters in this astute novel about mending wounds by diving into the truth of what first tore us apart.

The Madwoman Upstairsย byย Catherine Lowellย (Mar 01)ย

the Madwoman UpstairsIn Catherine Lowellโ€™s smart and original debut novel, the only remaining descendant of the Brontรซ family embarks on a modern-day literary scavenger hunt to find the familyโ€™s long-rumored secret estate, using only the clues her eccentric father left behind, and the Brontรซsโ€™ own novels.

Samantha Whipple is used to stirring up speculation wherever she goes. Since her fatherโ€™s untimely death, she is the presumed heir to a long-rumored trove of diaries, paintings, letters, and early novel drafts passed down from the Brontรซ familyโ€”a hidden fortune never revealed to anyone outside of the family, but endlessly speculated about by Brontรซ scholars and fanatics. Samantha, however, has never seen this alleged estate and for all she knows, itโ€™s just as fictional as Jane Eyre or Wuthering Heights.

Yet everything changes when Samantha enrolls at Oxford University and long lost objects from the past begin rematerializing in her life. Her fatherโ€™s distinctive copy of Jane Eyre, which should have perished in the fire that claimed his life, mysteriously appears on Samanthaโ€™s bed. Annotated in her fatherโ€™s handwriting, the book is the first of many clues in an elaborate scavenger hunt derived from the worldโ€™s greatest literature. With the help of a handsome but inscrutable professor, Samantha must plunge into a vast literary mystery and an untold family legacy, one that can only be solved by decoding the clues hidden within the Brontรซsโ€™ own writing.

For readers who devoured The Weird Sisters and Special Topics in Calamity Physics, The Madwoman Upstairs is a suspenseful, exhilarating debut by an exciting new talent who offers a moving exploration of what it means when the greatest truth is, in fact, fiction.
