My Thoughts

Synopsis

falling into usWhen Kyle Calloway died, he took a part of Nell with him. She wasn’t the only one left to pick up the pieces, however; Kyle’s death left a gaping hole in the hearts and lives of his parents and his older brother Colton, and ultimately broke the will of the girl he loved.

THE STORY YOU NEVER IMAGINED…

Becca de Rosa is Nell’s best friend. When Kyle died, Nell was so devastated that no one could reach her, not even her best friend Becca. As she tries to help Nell through her grief, Becca’s own life is thrust into turmoil, and everything she knows is changed.

Jason Dorsey asked Nell out the week after her sixteenth birthday, but that date never happened. Instead, he ended up going out with Nell’s best friend, Becca. He had no way of knowing, then, how that one date would send him on a life-long journey with Becca. He had no way of knowing the tragedies and triumphs he would experience, or that in Becca, he might find the love of a lifetime.

THE HEARTACHE YOU’LL NEVER FORGET…

My Review

“The only way past the pain is through it. You can’t escape it. You can’t ignore it. Pain, grief, anger, misery… they don’t go away–they just increase and compound and get worse. You have to live through them, acknowledge them. You have to give your pain its due.”

Falling Into You is a hard act to follow. I absolutely loved that book. I connected with the characters, I cried, I smiled and it was all a little magical to me. I had to reset my expectations before I started reading because I knew Falling Into Us was a different story altogether… unique, personal and moving all on its own. Our main characters are Becca de Rosa and Jason Dorsey… Nell and Kyle’s best friends respectively. Becca is a strong, yet vulnerable heroine. I found her character quite complex — she’s sensitive and fragile and insecure, but at the same time, brave and steadfast and strong. Jason Dorsey is kind, caring and powerful… a force to be reckoned with. Falling Into Us is the story of how they fell in love despite their difficult backgrounds, how they stayed in love in the face of unspeakable tragedy and how they evolved themselves in order to build a bright and healthy future together.

“I’d been in love with Jason Dorsey since forever, but he didn’t even know I existed except as Nell’s awkward friend.”

Becca has had a crush on Jason for so long, but Jason had only ever had eyes for Nell and everyone knew that. Taking a bet from his friends, Jason finally asks Nell out only to be ditched last minute by Nell after her and Kyle finally got together. When Nell suggests he ask Becca out, Jason decides to do it.

Becca is studious, focused and shy. She’s stutters, so she tirelessly writes poetry in notebook after notebook… in a place where her words flow effortlessly and seamlessly. Her raw emotions evident, her voice booming on the page, juxtaposed to real life, where she must follow her overly strict father’s orders, studying for hours each day and basically eradicating the possibility of having a normal teenage social life.

Once they go out on that one date, the course of their lives is forever altered. They are exactly what the other needs to grown and heal and evolve. The desire budding between them is new, but evident.

“God, Becca. Kissing you is… it’s seriously the best thing ever.”

Both Becca and Jason are complex and flawed characters. They not only have had difficult home lives, particularly Jason, but with Kyle’s death, their lives tailspinned. Suddenly, Jason’s best friend was gone and Becca’s best friend Nell was catatonic at best. In addition, Becca struggled with her brother’s bipolar disease.

Throughout it all, Becca and Jason are there for each other, although things are often extremely hard and painful and certainly not easy.

“Being in love is scary
So much like falling
A frightening descent into
Beautiful Madness
Yes, you and me
We’re
Falling Into Us”

I loved Jason for the rock he was for Becca. He loved her so much and would do anything for her. There were times were Becca just shut down and Jason was relentless in doing everything he could to make Becca okay.

“I can’t promise you forever, Beck.”…”I can’t promise you forever because that’s not long enough.”

Overall I really liked this book. Admittedly it didn’t overtake me the way Nell and Colton’s story did, however, I did really like Becca and Jason too… the unwavering dedication Jason had to Becca and the vulnerability, yet strength that Becca exuded. I did feel like the first half of the books was a bit more YA than I expected, but given their age, it was understandable. In the second half of the book, the steaminess factor exponentially increases with Becca’s sex drive demanding and rapacious.

“You’d never think it, but my quiet, hyper-intelligent, overachieving, rule-following girlfriend was a voracious, insatiable lover.”

I also loved, of course, the appearances Nell and Colton made. It was interesting to see some of what happened in their story expand in bits in pieces as we read about scenes from another perspective. And of course, Jasinda Wilder is an expert at making our hearts race, clench and break from what happens. I just love her books!
All in all, I loved the hopefulness that this book gave me, that no matter what, love is the glue that holds people together, making us strong enough to weather any storm.
